Harrietta was born in June 1848 in Ashton-in-Makerfield and her baptism took place there on June 11th, 1848.1 2  Harrietta's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Alice Welsby.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann. She had a brother and a sister, named Mary and Adelaide.  She was the second oldest of the three children. She had two half-brothers named Edward and William.
