Harriet was born in 1834 in Broughton (Salford) and her baptism took place on November 9th, 1834 in Manchester.1 2  Harriet's father was Robert (Thomas) Mather and her mother was Mary Ann Walmsley.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Worsley. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, James, George, Edwin, Julia and Maria.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
