Gertrude's father was Charles Mather and her mother was Sarah Morris. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Stott. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Arthur, Charles, Oswald, Ada and Bertha. She was the second oldest of the seven children.

- In 1905, Gertrude married William T Roberts at Bolton, Bank Street Chapel (also used by Bertha).
  
  Gertrude was 30 in 1911, and had moved to Blackpool.
