Ernest was born in June 1890 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy.1  Ernest's father was James Mather and his mother was Harriet Hill.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Dickinson. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, James, Emily, Annie, Miriam, Nellie and Hattie.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
