Elizabeth was born in January 1848 in Ancoats.1  Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Margaret Stockton (Slater).  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Margaret Dawson. She had four brothers and a sister, named John, Henry, Joseph, James and Ann.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
