Elizabeth, known as Betty, was born on January 23rd, 1828 in Lowton and her baptism took place on March 16th, 1828 at St. Luke (Lowton).1  Betty's father was Isaac Mather and her mother was Ann Eckersley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Ann, Martha and Jane.  She was the oldest of the six children.
