Elizabeth was born in 1829 in Hindley and her baptism took place on May 3rd, 1829 in Wigan.1  Elizabeth's father was Simon Mather and her mother was Jane Green.  Her paternal grandparents were Simon Mather and Sarah (Sally) Woodward. She had a brother and two sisters, named Peter, Sarah and Ellen.  She was the oldest of the four children.
