Edwin's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Grace Wood.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Joseph, John, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Mary, Betty, Ann, Emma, Alice and Grace.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
