Charles was born on March 21st, 1836 in Little Heaton and his baptism took place on December 25th, 1836 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Charles' father was Michael Mather and his mother was Betty Street.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Scholes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Wright, Michael, John, Ann, Alice, Betty and Mary.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
