James was born in June 1861 in Sharples.1  James' father was James Mason and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Tootel. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Joseph, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
