Roger was born in 1822 in Breightmet.1  Roger's father was Richard Lomax and his mother was Isabel (Isabella) Crompton.  His paternal grandparents were George Lomax and Catherine Crompton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, James, John, Catherine, Mary, Betty and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
