Mary was born in December 1858 in Darcy Lever and her baptism took place on January 16th, 1859 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was John Lomax and her mother was Margaret Bradley. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Alfred, John, Louisa, Martha, Eva and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
