Robert was born in 1864 in Neston.1  Robert's father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Martha Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Lewis and Catherine Dunkan. He had four brothers named James, Joseph, John and Thomas.  He was the fourth oldest of the five known children.
