John was born in 1868 in Neston.¹ John's father was John Lewis and his mother was Mary Davies. His paternal grandparents were James Lewis and Bridget Nowland. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Richard, William, Annie and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the six children.
