Elizabeth's father was James Lewis and her mother was Bridget Nowland.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth Beard. She had two brothers and a sister, named Richard, John and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the four children.  She died at the age of 66 in June 1896 in Neston.²
