Alice's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and her mother was Ellen Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. She had eleven brothers and five sisters, named James, John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Walter, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada. She was the third oldest of the seventeen children. She died in 1859 in Bolton.¹
