Sam was born in December 1842 in Huddersfield.¹

Sam's father was James Leech and his mother was Grace Hanson. He had three brothers and a sister, named Hanson, Isaac, Friend and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, Dan, Sam, Ben and Emma.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1844 in Huddersfield.¹
