Robert was born in June 1867 in Little Bolton.1  Robert's father was Robert Knowles and his mother was Mary Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Ellen, Alice, Jane, Elizabeth and Ellen.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.  He died at 2 months old on August 27th, 1867 in Little Bolton.  His burial was on August 27th, 1867 at St. Mary (Deane).2
