Richard was born in September 1810 in Turton and his baptism took place on September 30th, 1810 in Tottington.1 2  Richard's father was William Knowles and his mother was Betty Entwistle. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Rachel, Mary and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
