Mary was born in 1777 in Over Hulton and her baptism took place on November 1st, 1777 at St. Mary (Deane).1  Mary's father was John Howcroft and her mother was Alice Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Watson. She had three brothers named Richard, James and Howcroft.  She was the second youngest of the four known children.
