Thomas was born in 1739 in Heapey and his baptism took place on July 20th, 1739 at St. Andrew (Leyland). Thomas' father was John Howarth and his mother was Mary Howarth. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, George, Elizabeth and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
