James was born in 1723 in Mirebrook and his baptism took place on July 21st, 1723 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1  James' father was Edmund Howarth and his mother was Ann Staveacre. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Edmund, Robert, John, Alice and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
