James was born in 1703 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn) and his baptism took place there on January 16th, 1703.1  James' father was Giles Howarth and his mother was Mary Yates.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and <unknown>. He had eight brothers named Richard, Edmund, Thomas, John, Joseph, Benjamin, Henry and Gyles.
