Adam was born in 1827 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place there on March 25th, 1827.1 2  Adam's father was John Howarth and his mother was Ellen Bullough.  His paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. He had a brother and eight sisters, named John, Ann, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen, Rachel and Martha.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
