Esther was born in 1873 in Bolton.1  Esther's father was Thomas Horrocks and her mother was Jane Dewhurst.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Dewhurst and Esther Holt. She had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary and Fanny.

‌Esther and Herbert were married in a religious ceremony in 1896 in Halliwell.2  They had two daughters named Annie and Margaret.  There are possibly more children.
