Joseph's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson.  His maternal grandparents were Johannes Johnson and Cicely Rimmer. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Thomas, Mary and Elize.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 66 in October 1836 in Bickley.  He was buried on October 20th, 1836 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).¹
