John's father was James Carr Holt and his mother was Alice Rothwell.  His paternal grandparents were <male> Carr and Ann Holt. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Mary and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 2 in 1853 in Turton.¹
