James' father was Ralph Holt and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Joanna Hilton. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Hannah and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the four known children.  He died at 1 months old in December 1770 in Whitefield.  He was buried on December 20th, 1770 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).²
