Elizabeth was born in 1842 in Bolton.1  Elizabeth's father was William Hilton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary (Nancy) Stott. She had six sisters named Sarah, Mary, Esther, Hannah, Martha and Charlotte.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
