James was born in 1875 in Farnworth.1  James' father was Thomas Hickson and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Martha and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
