George was born in 1849 in Malpas.1   George's father was William Hewitt and his mother was Sarah Batho.  His maternal grandparents were George Batho and Martha Cartwright. He had two brothers and a sister, named Henry, Joseph and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four children.
