Mary was born in 1835. Mary's father was Joseph Hartley and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Booth. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Booth and Catherine Whalley. She had five brothers named William, Adam, John, Richard and Thomas. She was the second oldest of the six children.
