John was born in 1837 in Sharples and his baptism took place on September 17th, 1837 in Bolton.1  John's father was James Hardman and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had a brother and a sister, named David and Mary. He had an adopted brother named John. He had a half-brother named Robert.
