John was born in 1813 in Bolton and his christening took place on September 12th, 1813 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was Thomas Grundy and his mother was Mary Mather (tbc).  His paternal grandparents were John Grundy and <unknown>. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Sarah, Mary and Betty.  He was the oldest of the five children.
