William's father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah Blakeley. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, Handel and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Robert, James, Joseph, Wright, William, Mary, Rachel, Sarah and Ellen.
