John's father was Robert John Draine and his mother was Hannah (Anna) Astin. His paternal grandparents were John Draine and Betty Stott. He had an adopted brother named Lewis. He died at the age of 92 in December 1953 in Haslingden.³

- John was born in 1861 at Chapel Lane, Goodshaw. John is the only baptised son of Robert and Ann, and there is a suspicion if Robert didnt have children, that John he may have been the illegitimate son (e.g. of George Stocks, explained by DNA).
  
  1885 to 1893, John and Elizabeth lived in Rossendale. However, in 1888 there son John R was registered in Sharples. From 1895, the last two births are registered in Rawtenstall.
  
  In 1901, John and Elizabeth only had 3 surviving children; Mary M (15), Alice H (9) and Walter (1).
