Maria's father was John Davies and her mother was Ann Whitfield.  Her maternal grandparents were John Whitfield and Mary Tomlinson. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Joseph, Thomas, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Catherine.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.  She died whilst giving birth at the age of 34 in June 1870 in Wrexham.²
