Joseph was born in 1795 in Berry Brow and his baptism took place on September 21st, 1795 in Almondbury.1  Joseph's father was James Crosland and his mother was Sarah Ellam.  His paternal grandparents were James Crosland and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, Abraham, Thomas, James, Betty, Mary, Martha, Martha and Sarah.  He was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
