John was born in 1852 in Bolton.1  John's father was John Butler and her mother was Sarah Makin. She had a brother named Elizabeth.  She was the younger of the two children. She had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Samuel, Ellen, Hannah, Alice, Hannah, Sarah and Clara.
