Magdaline's father was James Buist and her mother was Isabella Farquharson  Mearns.  Her paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Magdalene Matthewson. She had four brothers and a sister, named Richard, John, George, David and Annie.  She was the third oldest of the six known children. She had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named James, Mary, Jane, Jessie, Williamina and Betsy.
