William was born in 1723 in Oldham and his baptism took place on September 8th, 1723 at St. Marys (Oldham).1  William's father was James Buckley Jnr and his mother was Sarah Cooper. He had a brother and five sisters, named Benjamin, Mary, Bette, Sarah, Anne and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
