James was born in 1754 in Oldham and his baptism took place on May 5th, 1754 at St. Marys (Oldham).1  James' father was Benjamin Buckley and his mother was Hannah Crossley.  His paternal grandparents were James Buckley Jnr and Sarah Cooper. He had a brother and two sisters, named Abraham, Sarah and Betty.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had five half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Joseph, Josiah, Benjamin, Benjamin, John, Mary, Anne and Ann.
