John was born in 1804 in Malpas and his christening took place there on September 21st, 1804.1  John's father was Thomas Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth Barrow. He had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Benjamin, Barnabas, Abraham, George and Ellen.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
