Jessie was born in March 1884 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  Jessie's father was Samuel Brereton and her mother was Ellen Hodkinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton and Mary Dutton. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, Frank, Annie and Amy.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
