James' father was Thomas Bowker and his mother was Sarah Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth Bostock. He had a brother and four sisters, named Willie, Sarah, Ethel, Emily and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Francis, Nancy and Elizabeth.
