Tom was born in March 1872 in Wakefield.1  Tom's father was John Whitehead and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Boothroyd. He had a brother and five sisters, named Jonas, Rachel, Eliza, Martha, Sarah and Ann.  He was the youngest of the seven known children.
