James was born in 1920. James' father was John Bennett and his mother was Hilda Johanna Olsen. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Bennett and Martha Magdalene Fuhrmaster. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, Grace, Mabel and Magdalen. He was the third youngest of the six children.
