Joshua's father was George Bateman and his mother was Elizabeth Mather. His maternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Margaret, Elizabeth and Maria. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 1 in February 1867 in Bolton. His burial was on February 23rd, 1867.²³
