John was born in 1776 in Bolton and his christening took place on December 29th, 1776 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was James Astley and his mother was Mary Bury. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, William, Nicholas, Samuel and Isobel.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
