Henry was born in March 1875 in Bolton.1  Henry's father was Thomas Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Ashcroft and Mary Longworth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Reuben, Walter, Thomas, Gertrude and Beatrice.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight known children.
